A historic horseback riding vacation in Cornacchino, Italy! How far back in time would like you to go?  Ancient times to explore the Etruscan Necropoles of Poggio Prisca,  the Ildebranda Tomb , the lost cave settlement of  Vitozza and an Etruscan vie cave (canyon cut in the tuff rock).  Medieval times to wander through the charming villages like Sorano or the cavernous Hermitage of Poggio Conte. ?  This horseback riding vacation will allow you to experience both historical periods. Along the way, you will ride along the tranquil Mazzano’s Lake through the wildly beautiful Lamone Forest and the wilderness of the Fiora River valley where canyons are cut by rushing streams in the jagged rock. You will have plenty of opportunities to cool off with an invigorating swim. Your lodging is in comfortable country B & B’s. Add the delicious Tuscan cuisine and you have a delightful horseback riding vacation.

“If you love the great outdoors, horses, organic food, ethical travel and amazing guides, then this is the holiday for you. Its very professionally run, the horses are incredibly well cared for and bullet proof.” J. L.

  • Ride Itinerary - Ancient Etruscan Trails

    Day 1:
You will be transferred from either the airport or train station to your country B & B.  In the evening, you will meet your guide and fellow riders.

    Day 2:
You will become acquainted with your horse during a trail which will lead to a picnic lunch. Afterwards, you will ride back to the stable.  Dinner will then be served.

    Day 3:
Your trail will traverse through a lofty beech forest to the banks of the Fiora river.  Here you can swim and enjoy a picnic. Afterwards, your group across ancient Etruscan roads (Vie Cave) cut deep into the tuff rock more than 2,000 years ago.  Along the way, you will pass the most famous monument in this part of Etruria, the Ildebranda Tomb.

    Day 4:
A lovely ride through vineyards and olive trees will bring you to a crossing of Fiora River. You will pass the Poggio Buco Necropolis before you reach your second country home for the dinner and overnight.

    Day 5:
Today, you can expect a long ride in the morning followed by a relaxing afternoon. Your trail will take you along the Fiora riverbanks to the hermitage of Poggio Conte.  Here is where 16th century hermits built a chapel entirely dug out of the tuff rock. The place is located on the Fiora banks surrounded by a magical forest. Lunch will be served at your next country home lodging. There is also a farm that breeds and trains Maremma horses using traditional methods and the owners have a private collection of Etruscan artefacts which they are happy to show to guests. In the afternoon, you may relax at the swimming pool.

    Day 6:
Your journey continues along the Olpeta deep cut Etruscan road (the only one in the area that contains the remains of an ancient Roman road). Then your horse will carry you across the Olpeta River and up to the site of the ancient city of Castro. Here you will enter the Lamone Forest Nature Reserve. Within this dense woodland, you will find wildflowers and native woodpeckers and falcons nesting on the rocky terrain of volcanic origin. The Selva del Lamone is harsh and wild region covered with lavic rock, dark ravines and impenetrable undergrowth. It served as a perfect hideout for fugitives and bandits. The most famous one, Domenichino Tiburzi, a kind of italian Robin Hood of the 19th century, got the nickname “Re del Lamone(King of the Lamone forest). The forest is also famous for its many volcanic rock formations, the “murge” (including the so calledRosa Crepante” which is certainly the most spectacular one). These “murges” are clusters of scattered stones, spewed from the crater (that now houses the lake Mezzano) over 50,000 years ago. Thanks to moisture that is retained by the porousvolcanic stones scattered over the entire surface of the forest it is colonized by a dense and tangled vegetation, which gives life to a truly unique ambience. You will also encounter Maremma cattle  grazing in the clearings of the forest. Before you leave the forest, you will stop for a picnic.  Next, you will ride across rolling hills with spectacular views.  Your lodging is near lake Mezzano, a crater lake of volcanic origin.  An absolute paradise!  Here you will be able to enjoy a swim before dinner.

    Day 7:
From Lake Mezzano, you will ride along verdant fields until you reach San Quirico then Vitozza, villages rich in medieval treasures, castle ruins and numerous caves that served as houses until the end of the eighteenth century. From there, your trail descends to the source of the Lente River and then ascend to Sorano. Etruscan roads continue your ride toward Montevitozzo before returning you to the B & B. In the evening, you will reminisce about your adventure with your fellow rider over dinner.  Small souvenirs and a map of your journey will be presented.

    Day 8:
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the train station or airport.
