An equestrian vacation in one of the most beautiful and untouched areas of New Zealand!  Your trails will lead you to natural beaches, rolling verdant fields, cool forests, dramatic sand dunes and picturesque lakes. Your base is a 240 acre three generation homestead farm nestled on the northern side of the South Head peninsula. The homestead’s location offers you a spectacular panoramic view of the Kaipara Harbour. You’ll be able to relax on the wonderful decks which overlook the swimming pool, enjoying pre-dinner drinks and leisurely breakfasts.  Your pace includes invigorating canters across the black sand of the untamed Muriwai Beach and delightful trots through pungent pine forests. This is a progressive ride so your lodging will be at the comfortable homestead and a renovated shepherds’ cottage.   RIDING IN NEW ZEALAND

  • Ride Itinerary - Auckland Harbor Horseback Ride

    Day One:
You will be transferred by your hosts from the Auckland airport or your Auckland hotel to South Kaipara Head, a one hour drive north-west of Auckland City. The drive will take you through some of New Zealand’s oldest vineyards, market gardens, and farm areas. If you want to visit something along the way – say a vineyard for wine tasting – your guide is happy to oblige. After arrival at the farmstead, you can spend some time familiarizing yourself with your horse and tack before having dinner with your hosts and fellow riders. (This can change according to flight arrival times, etc.)

    Day Two:
Your trail will lead you through the pungent pine Woodhill Forest to the vast black sands of Muriwai Beach. The beach is not only popular with surfers but also home to one of New Zealand’s largest onshore gannet (seabird) colonies.  You will have plenty of opportunities to canter along this expansive beach. Afterward, you will ride inland through the forest to the farmstead. A traditional dinner will be served.

    Day Three:
Another forest trail will lead you to the deep sand dune Lake Otatoa (Lake of the Warrior). Here you can choose to swim with or without your horse. Lunch will be served on the shores of the lake.  Your afternoon journey will end at a converted historic shearers’ quarters where you will spend the night. You will enjoy magnificent views until the sun sets.  Afterward, a delicious barbeque dinner will be served.

    Day Four:
The northern leg of your ride is complete as you ride to the end of the peninsula. You will marvel at the panoramic views of the largest harbor in the Southern Hemisphere. Next, you will ride across wilderness flats surrounded by towering 20m high (60 foot) sand dunes. If you want you can ride over one.  Then it’s onto the beach and nothing but sand and surf. You will cover 16km (10 miles) of beach before re-entering the forest on the homeward trail.

    Day Five:
You will be transferred to Auckland.  If you have time, you can take a short ride before you depart.
