An island horseback riding vacation to love! The Azores Isles are an archipelago (a group of islands) located in the Atlantic Ocean near Portugal. The region has been selected as one of the “2017 Top 100 Sustainable Destinations” and recipient of the “European Best Landscape Award.” Here you will discover a riding haven with well-trained Lusitano and Cruzado Portuguese horses. The landscapes are breath-taking with views of the ocean graced with colorful gardens and verdant pastures. São Miguel, known as the Green Island, holds a treasure full of interesting, exciting and exotic places waiting to be explored. You’ll find a wide variety of short and long trails. The rides go in different directions each day and can be adapted to all riding levels. You can unpack and relax, knowing that you return to the same place each night and even take a day rest if you feel like. A planned non-riding day offers either shopping in Ponta Delgada, the historical center of São Miguel’s main city or a whale and dolphin safari (ticket not included – 55€ per person). Your accommodation is a genuine 17th-century estate with beautiful surroundings near the ocean. Non-riding activities included two beautiful nearby golf courses, beaches, lagoons, thermal waters, whale and dolphin safaris, fishing, sailing and scenic diving. Ride Itinerary - Azores Island Horseback Ride
You will be transferred from the airport to Quinta da Terça. After check-in and, should you arrive in the morning, you are free to explore the area or rest. You will have also the opportunity to learn more about the Lusitano Horse breed. After enjoying the beautiful sunset, you will enjoy a delicious dinner that will be served in the Quinta.
After breakfast, you will mount up for 1-hour riding lesson to become acquainted with your horse After lunch served either at the farm or a local restaurant, you will explore the picturesque village of Ribeirinha by horse. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to delight in fun canters. Your trail starts close to the ocean; then up and over the Pico da Multa hill; continuing through the village of Gramas, across two small rivers and finishing close to Ribera Grande. Some of the points of interest of this parish are Miradouro da Vigia da Baleia, Port of Santa Iria, the church and center of the locality, the area of the Chão das Gatas. Your day ends with a traditional dinner served at the hotel.
Today, your group will have a full day of riding along the south coast to a quaint village in Varzea. Várzea is part of the parish of the Ginetes on the island of São Miguel. This village is located at high altitude in the foothills of the Vulcão das Sete Cidades (Volcano of the Seven Cities). It is surrounded by pastures and its main economic activity is agriculture. In this village, there is a Christian temple dedicated to the evocation of the Holy Family, the Church of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. You will marvel over spectacular nature and oceanic views. Lunch in either at a restaurant in the village of Feteiras or as a picnic along the way. You will return to the hotel before sunset for dinner.
You will have a choice from two trails:
1) Remédios: You will ride on small roads and over pastures. A large part of the ride is across fields with milking cows. From these green pastures, you will have nice views over the middle parts of S. Miguel.
2) Cabuco: A charming half day ride which leads up and down winding roads with several nice opportunities for canter. You will ride to the top of a field for a magnificent view of the north as well as the south coast.
Lunch will be served at the hotel or at a local restaurant near Ponta Delgada.
In the afternoon, you can also choose one of the non-riding programs available:
1) Tour and shop in Ponta Delgada: You will stroll the historical center of São Miguel’s main city. Your guide will lead you to strategic spots and you can shop.
2) Whale & Dolphin Safari (ticket not included – 55€ per pax/net) Get on board of a fun trip that gives you a chance to meet and admire the marine mammals of the Azores in their natural habitat with a mixture of fun, adventure, discovery and scientific knowledge. Duration: 2h30m to 3h. This is subject to weather conditions and logistics.
Your day ends with another delicious dinner served at the hotel.
This will be an unforgettable day! The ride takes you along a volcano crater rim overlooking twin sparkling lakes on one side and the white-capped oceanic waves on the other. The tranquility of the waters, the scented hydrangeas border on the crater rim contrast the steep sides of the crater to create a fascinating sight. Your trail descends into the crater and then to the picturesque village of Sete Cidades bordered by the Green and the Blue lakes. Picnic lunch is included during this full day ride. You will return to the hotel before sunset for dinner and overnight.
Your trail starts in the seaside village of Calhetas on the north coast and ending along the manorhouses of Livramento. Along the way, you will admire the many diverse sights from lush green valleys to splendid sea views to charming villages. Picnic lunch is planned. In the afternoon, your ride will continue across this natural paradise. At day’s endy, you will return to the hotel.
This 2-3 hour morning ride will take you across the amazing Azorean landscape. Your trail will wind through villages, along intriguing stone walls, across pastures dotted with dairy cows to a rainforest “jungle.” Lunch will be served at a local restaurant or at your hotel. In the afternoon, you will be free to enjoy the last day in the Azores with preferred non-riding activities and/or shopping. A special farewell dinner will be served at the hotel.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the Ponta Delgada Airport.

The best months to visit the Azores are from April through November. June through August are the busy tourist season. The other months can be cool and rainy.
