Ride Itinerary - Catalonia Wine and Coast Ride
You will be transferred from the airport to the Catalan country house. The house dates back to the 17th century and immediately welcomes you to explore. The rooms are tastefully furnished with views of meadows, forests and the surrounding horse pastures. The unique light transforms the surroundings into a picturesque natural painting.
A delicious breakfast is followed by a short transfer to our horse farm Mas Alba where you will meet your proud Spanish four-legged partners. After you saddle your horse, you will mount up to ride on a trail that leads you through thick stone oak and pine forests towards the River Fluvia. Sun rays break through the deep green of the seemingly tropical jungle. Bamboo trees border the path, and high up creepers and vines grow around the trees. This part of Spain can remind one of Costa Rica. At the river, a lunch table prepared with love is waiting for your group. You will enjoy various Catalan delights – fresh salad, Manchego cheese, home-made goat cheese, fruits such as figs, peaches and cherries. In the afternoon, you will ride to your first B &B. It offers a South American style garden paradise to relax in.
Winding isolated paths will lead you through the full-green floodplains along the river. A pleasant tranquillity surrounds you. Next, you will ride through the Catalonian stone villages and delight as the hooves of your horses striking the narrow streets and alleys echo around you. At a lake, you will regain your strength with a tasty picnic. Later in the afternoon, you can canter towards the coast. Depending on the season, your group will either spend the night in a beautiful beach hotel by the sea, or in a 16th-century mill near the beach.
A delightful beach ride begins your day. The water splashes, the sand flies, as you canter into the sunrise. The horses play with the waves while you try to stay dry. An unforgettable experience! In the middle of the bay, the River Fluvia flows into the sea. Behind the river lies the wetland of Aiguamolls. Amid the rice fields, your impressive night’s lodging will be found – Catalonia’s oldest P.R.E. (Pura Raza Española) Andalusian horse stud. The stud owns more than 30 brood mares and excellent stallions, some with a significant impact on the breeding of the Pura Raza Española. The horses, that are bred there are not only characterized by their beauty, but also by their outstanding attitude and rideability. Besides the wonderful horses and their history, charmingly furnished rooms await you. You will have time to look around and relax. And who knows – maybe you will find the horses of your dreams here! In this wonderful atmosphere, you will savor a dinner of delicious paella with seafood and fresh vegetables.
Your day begins with invigorating trots and canters as you ride to the medieval Castelló with its impressive cathedral. Crossing pasturelands, your group will speedily pass fields of vines and sunflowers to your destination of Perelada. In this village, you will find a friendly guesthouse with a beautiful garden and the swimming pool. After a picnic, you will visit the glorious castle and the local Bodega (winery) where you will not only learn interesting facts about Cava but we will have a Cava tasting as well. Salud!
You will ride along the banks of the River Llobregat and then through the wild landscape at the foot of the Albera Mountains. Cork and stone oak forests now dominate the landscape occasionally interrupted by magical vineyards. Your group will visit a family-run winery to try one of the best wines of this area and to indulge in Catalan delicacies. Full of new energy, you will continue to ride along intricate stone terraces lined with ancient olive trees. You will be surrounded by a kaleidoscope of colorful flowers growing in the Orlina floodplains. Next, you will pass mystically raised round rock formations and Celtic tombs which will remind you of a great past. Finally, you will ride through the lowlands of the Ampurdán which resemble an amphitheater surrounded by mountains and whose exit is at the Gulf of Roses. You will stay the night at Emilia’s country house in the village of Garriguella nestled in the wine growing district. The tasteful furnishing, the whirlpool and a nice ambiance are perfect for relaxing. Emilia is well-known for her delicious Mediterranean cuisine which you will extensively enjoy.
Your trail ascends over the coastal mountains, the last foothills of the Pyrenees. Having reached the crest, a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire Gulf of Lion up to the mysterious mountain Canigó is awaiting you. After a delicious picnic at the beach, you will travel back to Emilia’s country house. It’s nearly time to say farewell. Your group will enjoy your last dinner together and let a wonderful week come to an end.
You will be transferred to Barcelona or Girona airport.
