An extraordinary desert horseback safari in Namibia, Africa. Your horseback riding vacation crosses the oldest, and one of the most scenic deserts on earth, the Namib.  Namib means “an area where there is nothing.”  A true description as the gravel and calcrete region stretches along Namibia’s entire Atlantic coast. Far from lifeless, this is the home to giraffe, springbok and oryx.  Odd native plants include the world’s oldest two leaved welwitschia and the camel thorn trees.  A visit to the World Heritage Sossusvlei is included. This vast region is a white, salt and clay pan surrounded by lofty red dunes.

The guides have spent almost 30 years in perfecting this desert horseback safari.  Trails lead past the ochre sand dunes and infinite desert plains. Capable riders can climb to the top of a dune for a spectacular view! This is challenging ride and not for the faint-hearted. You will  ride fast for long stretches over rugged terrain. The horses are surefooted and fit as they live on the rough terrain in the bush. HORSEBACK RIDING IN AFRICA

For 2 nights, you will stay in a lodge. The remainder of the time will be in open air camps with ice in your sundowners, hot bucket showers, and delicious food around companion campfires. Currently,  Namibia is politically stable and safe.

“I was lucky enough to be part of the Namib desert ride this May and the experience exceeded my expectations in every way. Never have horses been cared for so well or guests given such a wonderful experience. The terrain and the riding were highlights but then so were the team, food, care, fellow guests. We all had the trip of a lifetime.”

    Day 3:
Your first riding day starts amid the encircling Naukluft (narrow gorge) mountains. This will be a short ride to get acquainted with your horse, the terrain and the delightful companionship

    Day 4 – 6:
While Namibia’s westward- flowing rivers rarely flow, they all run through deep valleys etched at a time when Namibia was wetter and sea levels were lower. Your group will cross two river canyons on the way to the Namib plains. The Gaub and the much larger Kuiseb form a dramatic end to the 400-km long Namib Sand Sea. Following the Mountain Zebra tracks, your trails will  of  crisscross the steep sides of the canyons. This is a technical descent requires some walking/scrambling into and out of the Canyon. The high, narrow walls of the canyon preserve an almost year-round supply of precious water for the wildlife in this area.

    Day 7 – 10:
Good going affords some fast-paced riding on the wide grassy plains of the Namib. Acacia tree lined dry watercourses are a much favored resting place for giraffe, springbok and oryx. As the plains become more arid strange shapes form and disappear in mirages and dinosaur-like plants tell of a land of great antiquity and tremendous solitude. The 600 million years old Swakop River basin has eroded into a bizarre moon like landscape. Curious black ridges of dolerite intrusions form whalebacks on the hills surrounding the river basin. Your ride ends with a trail to the sea and canter along the beach.

    Day 11:
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport (just over 5-hour commute). Arriving in time for departure flights from Windhoek International Airport after 3:00 PM.
