A wonderful horseback riding vacation in the southernmost territory of Spain! Your trails will take you across vast sand dune beaches and secluded mountain trails. Your destination is the Strait of Gibraltar. Campo de Gibraltar, located in the southeast province of Cadiz, acts as a border between Europe and Africa as well as the gateway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Your riding terrain includes golden sand dune beaches and the forests of two natural parks. The famed Punta Paloma beach has miles of unspoiled windswept sands. The last European forest, the Alcornocales Natural Park houses the biggest forest of cork oaks. The Strait of Gibraltar Natural Park is a haven for millions of migratory birds which annually cross the strait between Europe and Africa. Your trail ends at both the picturesque town of  Tarifa in the province of Cádiz. A non-riding day provides a visit to the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art and a Flamenco tablao dance performance. Along the way, you will enjoy delicious traditional Spanish cuisine and wines. Add spectacular views of the Strait, Morocco, and the mythical Djebel Musa and you have a memorable ride!   RIDING IN SPAIN

“The area is ripe with history and it was great to discover it while on horseback. Also, loved to be able to see the African coast from the mountains in the natural parks of the area.” M.C.

  • Ride Itinerary - Iberian Ride to Gibraltar

    Day 1:
You will be transferred from the Malaga or Jerez airports to the Los Barrios meeting point.

    Day 2:
You will ride along roads that were made by the Republican prisoners between 1931 and 1942. The route offers a splendid view of the Valley of Ojén, a wonderful contrast between the cattle pastures leafy cork trees forests, and bushy masses of wetland gall. The valley is recognized by the Andalucia Bird Society due to the numerous native birds which nest there. A picnic lunch will be served along the way. Dinner and accommodation in Hotel La Montera Plaza.

    Day 3:
Your trail will lead you along secluded mountain paths where bandits once assaulted carriages loaded with items coming from Gibraltar. The surrounding forests will enchant you. Your destination is the walled windswept old village of Tarifa.  The town’s tip-of-Spain location, where the Mediterranean and the Atlantic meet, provides a haven for surfers and an African flavor.

    Day 4:
Your group will ride through a pungent pine forest along the Atlantic coast. Along the way, you will enjoy splendid views of the distant African continent.  This coastal territory was populated by the Phoenicians who were later conquered by the Romans. The lunch venue will either be in a traditional restaurant. In the afternoon, you will ride along the golden sand dunes of Tarifa coast.  Your destination is Spain’s famous unspoiled beach, Punta Paloma. Dinner and accommodation in Hotel La Peña in Tarifa.

    Day 5:
After breakfast in a traditional Jerez roadside restaurant, you will visit the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. The School is based in Jerez de la Frontera and famous for their “How Andalusian Horses Dance”, a unique show that both exhibits and summarizes in a seemingly natural way all the work that the institution has done since its beginning. Lunch will include a Flamenco tablao performance.  Accommodation and dinner in Hotel La Peña.

    Day 6:
Today, you will ride along the southernmost route of the Iberian Peninsula. Your old herders’ trail will parallel the coast. The whole route constitutes a splendid natural viewpoint of the Strait, Morocco, the colony of Gibraltar, and the Djebel Musa. The Djebel Musa was a mythological element in the strait of Gibraltar. It was an ancient boundary of the Greek world. Dinner and accommodation in Hotel Meson Sancho Algeciras

    Day 7:
Your group will follow the La Trocha path that has been used for centuries. The road is found in a hidden area of the Natural Park of Los Alcornocales. It was impossible to pass with carriages.  The road was used by those who were brave and daring. Frequented by smugglers, it was a complicated crossing because at the time, every traveler encounter raised suspicions. However, it saved a traveling day to Cadiz. Along the way, you will enjoy one of the most beautiful and wild landscapes of Andalusia. Shadowy slopes, cliffs, ravines and deep gorges crossed by streams where only the murmur of water is heard. Upholstered by a green cloak of cork oaks, this is a surprising landscape that many do not know.

    Day 8:
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport.
