Fascinating horseback riding vacation in Andalusia, Spain! This inn to inn ride invites you to experience mountain riding in Spain’s snowy range, the Andalusia. Near the Guadix, you will marvel at the plateaus of golden grain fields surrounded by weather sheared clay mountains. Your route to the snow-capped mountain peak will take you through groves of almonds, olive and chestnuts, quaint Moorish villages and a stoic medieval castle. You will be fascinated by the homes and hotels that are dug into the hillsides. There are intriguing shops to visit and tapas for you to enjoy.

“A happy experience that will continue to warm us up for the winter months ahead, it has inspired us all to ride more frequently. Overall it was excellent, a lovely rural Spanish experience with good riding, great teacher, tasty food and brilliant sunshine. Memories include the Spanish countryside, increasing confidence in riding, relaxing by the pool and dining outside.”

Your ride begins at the foot of the medieval La Calahorra Castle. Along the way, your trail will skirt robust orchards of almond, fig, and olive trees; all irrigated by methods dating back to the Arab occupation.

    Day 3: Tuesday
Your trail ascends from the red canyon of the Zalabi Valley to a high plateau and the village of Albunan, renowned for its Arab architecture. Your picnic lunch will be served next to the Cogollos Lake which is fed by the melting snow from the mountaintop. Your ride will continue through the pine forests of the natural park where golden eagles and rare butterflies live. You will enjoy the contrasting landscapes from semi-desert plains to the lush valley and the tranquil Cogollos Lake.

    Day 4: Wednesday
This morning you will climb to the Postero Alto summit, riding through Mediterranean pine forests and along crystalline stream beds. You will eventually reach the summit at 1,850 meters. After a picnic next to the Alhorí river, you will ride along tracks commonly used by local cowboys to round up cattle.

    Day 5: Thursday
Today you will climb through a contrasting variety of sceneries, including rich and plentiful stream beds, fields full of almond and olive plantations, and once you reach above 2000 meters, alpine pastures where Spanish bulls graze in peace. Following a picnic lunch, you will ride along the old mining paths to arrive at the picturesque ancient Arab village of Jerez del Marquesado.

    Day 6: Friday
You will ride through hilly landscapes before reaching your picnic on the edge of the Alhama River. Your trail becomes skirted with pungent pine trees and leads you to Guadix, famous for its cave homes and considered one of the oldest human settlements in Spain. There you can explore the Alcazaba, the original Arabic medieval cathedral and several buildings of the Mudejar style as well as enjoy the best tapas in Andalusia. Your lodging is a special experience at an inn with rooms built into the side of the mountain featuring cave bedrooms.
