This horseback riding vacation in Iceland will provide a dramatic volcanic landscape of geysers, hot springs, waterfalls, glaciers and black-sand beaches. The region is the home of the Vikings and geothermal power. You will ride 11 – 18 miles per day on wonderful tölting tracks that will lead you across a brilliant green countryside with marvelous views of the Hekla Volcano and the Langjökull and Eyjafjallajökull Glaciers; the uninhabited wilderness north of the picturesque Tungufellsdalur Valley and along the mighty salmon Stóra-Laxá River which is lined with fantastic basalt columns. You will ride the sturdy Icelandic Horse whose special gait, the tölt, is a very comfortable four beat gait similar to the rack of the American Saddlebred. The horse can go very fast in this particular gait and the gait is ideal for long distance traveling. In spite of their small size (about 140 cm), they are considered horses not ponies and carry easily a full grown adult. You will enjoy the comfortable accommodations of a 3+* hotel with a private bathroom or a B & B with shared facilities.  Your meals will be prepared with locally sourced, mainly organic produce and meats. At the end of the day, you will delight in soaking in a hot tub in the beautiful hotel garden underneath the midnight sun during summer or the Northern lights in autumn. In addition, you can slip away to a natural hot spring located in a secret lagoon. Several geothermal springs and a little geyser which erupts every 5 minutes and rising steam gives a magical feeling. There are also non-riding activities such as river rafting or a thrilling ride on a river jet. Four riding day, family options and inn to inn rides are also available. A unique horseback riding vacation that will provide lifetime memories!   RIDING IN ICELAND

My family are all expert riders (I am a professional equestrian) and we all couldn’t recommend them more! We rode for 5 days, each day more beautiful then the next. The owners are kind, funny, salt of the Earth type of people and our guide Martina was awesome! As an equestrian, I am bored on most riding tours, but NOT here! They tailored our experience perfectly to our riding level and I had such a blast. The horses are very well trained and very well cared for. We rode to local hot springs and cafes with amazing food.
We left feeling like we were a part of their family! 10/10 would recommend!! Z.S., USA

  • Ride Itinerary - Iceland Volcano and Glacier Ride

    Day 1:
At 9:00 AM, you will be transferred from the BSÍ bus terminal in Reykjavík. If you are staying at a pre-ride hotel in Reykjavik, a pickup can be arranged at your hotel between 8:00 – 9:00 AM.  An airport bus www.flybus.is offers a convenient shuttle directly from Keflavík Airport to the BSÍ bus terminal. The city center with cafés, shops and museums is within an easy walking distance from the BSÍ. Luggage can be safely stored for a small fee at the BSÍ bus terminal. Please be ready in your riding clothes at pick up. Transfer to the farm Syðra-Langholt for your first ride. After an introduction on the safety issues, tack and gaits of the Icelandic horse, you will set off for a lovely gentle ride over good tölting tracks. Your route takes you through rolling hills and idyllic farmland with young horses, sheep and cattle grazing on endless green fields. If you think of typical Icelandic farm life – here it is! Your group will stop at the natural hot springs of the Secret Lagoon. The pool´s steam rising into the air gives the place a magical feeling. The warm water keeps a temperature of 38-40° Celsius all year round. Close by there is even a little Geysir which erupts every 5 minutes, showing off for the guests relaxing in the hot spring. Changing rooms with showers are on site. You will mount up to ride back to the farm for a coffee and a last hug for your new four–legged furry friend! During the ride, we will find a beautiful spot for our cozy picnic lunch. After the ride, if you stay at the hotel, you will get a private transfer to the hotel in Flúðir.  If you stay at the B & B, you will remain on the farm. Evening and dinner will be on your own.  A relaxing bath in the hot tub is highly recommended after the long ride! (riding distance  11 – 12 miles)

    Day 2:
After breakfast, you will embark on your highland adventure. Today, your group will ride underneath the basalt columns of Hrepphólar along the canyon of the Stóra-Laxá River. You will enjoy a luxury outdoor lunch at the romantic Hrunalaug, a beautiful secluded natural hot spring amid a little private valley. Your menu includes cold and hot beverages, a fizzy drink, sandwiches, salads, cakes and fresh fruit and vegetables from the local producers at Flúðir. Back in the saddle again, you will ride to Hrunaréttir sheep paddock, used in the autumn for separating the sheep returning from the highland. Your ride continues over the mountains to Hvítárdalur farm where your group will leave the horses for the night. You will return after a short drive back to your cozy hotel and guesthouse beds. ( riding distance ca. 9 – 10 miles).  The evening is open for individual dinners and program.

    Day 3:
Today is going to be a wonderful ride into the uninhabited wilderness north of the romantic valley of Tungufellsdalur. Your horse will climb onto a high mountain plateau and follow the narrow tracks made only by sheep and horses. The views of the wild green mountainside are wonderful!  Your trail follows little creeks fed with spring water. Next, you will pass the abandoned farm of Kluftir to leave your horse at Kaldbak farm. A short transfer back to the hotel/guesthouse will conclude your truly adventurous ride! ( riding distance ca. 9 – 10 miles). Evening open for individual dinners and program.

     Day 4:
After breakfast and check-out at the hotel/guesthouse, you will return to the horses for a last day´s ride along the river Stóra-Laxá. Along the way, your group will stop at the little local museum, Samansafnið, and take a peek into the old days of farming life in Iceland. You will then ride back to the farm where a sumptuous goodbye coffee and cake treat will be served.  You will then be transferred back to Reykjavík  (driving distance 10 miles) and dropped off at BSÍ bus station or your post-ride accommodation in the capital area. The guide is happy to arrange this Reykjavík accommodation for you!
