  • Ride Overview - Patagonia Pioneers Ride
    • Adventure Ride
    • Camping
    • Rugged Mountains

You will ride through the pristine Patagonian wilderness to your camp accessible only by horseback. Your base is an estancia nestled in the Andes Mountains. The land offers clear bubbling streams filled with trout, gigantic monkey trees, and breathtaking mountain peaks. Your evenings will be spent under the spectacular stars of the southern hemisphere.

“The stunning scenery aside, the memories instilled in me on this trip are those of a peaceful, pristine, untouched wilderness. Drinking water right out of the mountain-fed streams, not seeing a soul for the entire trip. These simple pleasures would be my definition of Patagonia.” S. H. Canada

    Day 1:
Transfer from San Martin de Los Andes Airport to the estancia camping lodge for a traditional Argentine barbecue.

    Day 2:
After breakfast and last minute packing, you will meet the horses. Say farewell to the last sight of civilization in this working Estancia as we start the ride into remote territories. You will head west, to the Andes range. At first, the typical dry Patagonian steppe surrounds you, but it gradually fades out. We are going towards one of the largest giant monkey puzzle trees woods in Patagonia. These trees only live here and can grow 1000 years old. Stop for lunch under the first group of them. When you reach Puesto Ignacio, your campsite for the night, you will leave all heavy items behind and go for a ride into the woods. This is the first chance to feel Patagonian vastness and the immense size of these very old trees.

    Day 3:
This day is filled with brisk canters and gallops as you pass noires trees to a lunch on the banks of the Relén River. Here you can try your hand at trout fishing.

    Day 4:
After breakfast, you will leave the campsite. This day we will go north and then west. After moving to another valley, there will be plenty of chances for cantering and galloping, for those who like it. You will start to see ñires trees, a typical tree of the region. Enjoy lunch on the way under the shade of huge Monkey puzzle trees. The afternoon ride will take you to higher ground. You may see the condors and a Mapuche Indian reservation territory. The night campsite, Mallín de las Lengas, is at the border of a fairy tale lengas forest, worthy of a Tolkien novel. It is so pristine that the dead giant trees have piled up over the centuries. They are all around still lying on the ground. At night, an energizing meal.

    Day 5:
After breakfast, the ride will continue the ascent to the Picudo Mountain, the highest riding point of the trail. A breathtaking view of the mountains and valleys await you. Then you will descend through the half-light in the dense lengas forest to your Lake Polcahue campsite under the monkey puzzle trees.

    Day 6:
During the morning you will ride straight west. This valley has been used over the centuries by the Mapuche Indians to reach de Pacific Ocean crossing the Andes range. We will stop close to the Chilean border. We go past the Pulmarí lake. After a long day, we arrive at sunset at the Estancia ready to enjoy a few basic privileges of civilization: electricity and hot water. Farewell dinner will be prepared.

    Day 7:
After breakfast, transfer back to San Martín de los Andes airport.
