Day 1:
Transfer from your airport to the Lodge. You will meet your guide and fellow riders at dinner. You will be lulled to sleep by the ever present sound of the river.
Day 2:
After a hearty breakfast, you will mount up for a ride around the flanks of 3000 foot high Pukeokahu Mountain. Next, you will follow a trail down into the Rangitikei River Canyon. This canyon is home to immense papa cliffs, river terraces, and crystal clear water. You will cross the river several times as you traverse to your downstream destination, the Tarata Fishaway Lodge. In the late afternoon, after the horses have been cared for, you can put your feet up or soak in the hot tub with a well earned glass of wine, and soak in the hot tub. After relaxing, it will be time to head over to the Tarata Homestead for dinner. On the breeze, you can hear the river telling you about tomorrow. Come and explore more it says.
Day 3:
Today’s trail will lead you back towards the river valley. You can expect more river crossings, and ascending trails over the summit of Pukeokahu. Everywhere you look is one picture postcard scene after another. A late lunch will provide the time to absorb all the wonders around you. You will return to your riverside lodge.
Day 4:
You will explore the rolling foot hills of a traditional shepherd’s trail on this 2-hour trail ride.
Day 5:
This horse trek entails approximately 3 hours on horse back. Your trail will take you along the foothills of a major local landmark known as Pukeokahu (Hill of the Hawk). This trail ride also gives you the opportunity to experience views of Mt Ruapehu and the northern Ruahine ranges, and incorporates stopping at some spectacular viewing points overlooking the Rangitikei River canyon.
Day 6:
You need something that is like a big sigh, something where you can feel a little at rest and watch the world go by, even if for only a couple of hours. At this point we are not going to tell you anymore, other than at some point bubbles and crackers and lots of great scenery are involved. This is a late afternoon three hour ride. The late afternoon sun will paint the landscape in a rich hue of greens and browns. There is the expectancy in the air of a fun, relaxing, couple of hours as your guide goes through what you need to know about your sunset horseback tour. And then you will mount up for a very special experience!
Day 7:
After breakfast, you will transfer to your airport.
