This Isle of Crete horseback riding vacation is a mystical venue for the experienced rider! You will enjoy a Greek adventure trail of 160 km through mountain areas down to the Libyan Sea. A week-long ride with an experienced guide starting with a quick canter over the Lassithi high plateau. See the biggest colony of vultures in Europe which make the high mountains home. Sleep on the south coast where fresh fish meals and swim with the horse.  The trail includes three days over mountainous areas, traveling slowly as you descend and ascend over rocky paths. Following this, three trail days at a faster pace as you ride over the flat plateau or through the countryside with its villages, olive groves, vineyards and ancient sites holding timeless myths.   RIDING IN GREECE

“Join a modern Odyssey of experience and adventure. Only then shall your heart beat in rhythms long forgotten!”

  • Ride Itinerary - Footpaths of Zeus Ride

    Day 1:
Arrival, a welcome at the 4**** hotel, a dive in the pool and evening dinner in the Restaurant Velani. Also, a briefing about the trail route.  Check-in to the hotel is 2:00 PM.

    Day 2:
You will begin your trip headed north; ride up the hills of Sfendili. Cross the Byzantine church of Avdou, over the plateau of Mochos and enjoy an excellent view of the Psiloritis Mountains, highest peaks of the island.

    Day 3:
The trail starts with a spectacular climb. After riding through the gorge of Gonies, climb up from sea level to 1100 meters, over an old donkey route. In the past, this was the only possible path to the Lassithi Plateau. Enjoy the breathtaking views and eat a lunch cooked in a traditional oven. In the evening, ride over the Lassithi Plateau. This fertile Plateau between the tops of the Dikti Mountains is known for its white windmills irrigating the land. Meet the locals still working with their donkeys on the land. Overnight in Magoulas.

    Day 4:
Today you will cross the Dikti mountain range, headed south. Peaceful and serene, experience the special feeling of being alone with the horses, the mountains, nature. Overnight in hotel, the horses will stay in the mountains

    Day 5:
Ride downhill through a desert land dried by the south winds out of Africa to the clear blue water of the Libyan Sea to relax with a refreshing dive. Go for a swim with the horses (As long as the sea conditions permit). You will sleep next to the sea and of course eat fresh fish from the wood-fired oven. Overnight in Keratokambos.

    Day 6:
Ride along the sea and then turn inland again. You will follow the Anapodaris River, along with a 5-km long gorge. Suddenly the land becomes more friendly, hilly with many olive and wine yards. Cross through villages and let the horses drink in Lake Ini. Overnight transport to the Hotel.

    Day 7:
You will ride back to Avdou through typical Greek countryside. Pass Greek villages where time seems to stand still. Feel welcomed to stop and drink an Ouzo with the Cretans at one of the village squares.

    Day 8:
Breakfast and departure. Check-out of the hotel is noon.
